What does "sisukat" mean?
Sisukat is the nickname my high school friends made up for me. They put the word "Sisu" (pronounced see'-soo) together with the first 3 letters of my name, Katri. So here's the really cool part - When researching the web to make sure no one else had a business called "Sisukat Designs", I learned that the word "sisukat" is an Estonian word which means "meaningful"!
Coincidentally, or maybe not, my business is all about bringing meaning to your life through creativity!
I am 100% Finnish, born on Cape Cod. My favorite Finnish word is SISU. It is generally defined as persistent determination and resolve to continue on in the face of adversity. Some believe it is a magical quality that exists in all of us (not just Finns) combining stamina, perseverance, and courage. As we know life is a roller coaster with its highs and lows. The lowest time in my life was December 1997 when my sister, Elsie, was taken from our family at the age of 31. From that day, my goal has been to enjoy life and keep my memories of her and joy alive in my heart.
Elsie had a favorite t-shirt from an Earth Day concert we went. After she passed, I wore the t-shirt every chance I could, so much so that it finally became too thin to wear. I kept it in my drawer because I couldn't bring myself to throw it away. Then one day I was at a craft store and saw the 12 in x 12 in frames designed for record album covers. It was perfect for her t-shirt! So i now hangs in our home and it reminds me daily of fun times with my sister.
